College: Arts and Sciences
Degree: Bachelor of Music Education
Major: Music Education
Effective Term: Fall 2019
The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Music Education major prepares students for a life in music. UNF graduates of the Bachelor of Music Education (BME) program will demonstrate mastery of music content knowledge and teaching skills that leads to effective instruction in music education. The core learning objectives of the Music Education program are correlated to the National Association of Schools of Music standards and the Florida Accomplished Practices at the pre-professional level.

Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an academic advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a complete list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, the student’s major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). Music Education majors must complete all General Education course work with a grade of C or higher.

  • Visit the School of Music webpage for a complete list of Music Education prerequisites. Courses MUE2040 Foundations of Music Education requires 18 hours of community field work.

  • Admission into the Music Education major requires a successful performance audition on an appropriate instrument or voice. A piano proficiency exam is required. Students without piano proficiency must complete four semesters of Class Piano. A Music Theory proficiency exam is also required.

  • Admission into Music Education also requires a minimum of 60 semester hours or a state of Florida AA degree with a grade point average of 2.50 or better and passing scores on all four parts of the General Knowledge (GK) test of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination by Term 5. Program admission requires a decision by a college administrator or faculty member. Students are not guaranteed admission into this program. Find specific admission criteria for this program on your Degree Evaluation, School of Music website, university catalog or consult your academic advisor. For more information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.

  • All music education students are required to enroll in a major ensemble for every semester in residence except for the internship semester. Placement in selective ensembles is determined by competitive audition. Music courses are sequential. Required Music courses are offered Fall and Spring Terms only.

  • Major Elective Course options are listed in the catalog, on the Degree Evaluation and the School of Music webpage. Consult music education faculty for any questions regarding these Major Electives.

  • Students must notify the School of Music 24 hours in advance if the first day of class will be missed. Failure to do so may forfeit the student's place in that class.

  • A minimum grade of "C" is required in all academic course work and a minimum grade of "B" is required in applied music areas for the Bachelor of Music Education (BME). Students must maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.50 or better for each semester they are enrolled in the program. Review the Student Probation Policy and the Sophomore Review Policy located in the School of Music Student Handbook.

  • A level 2 background check (including fingerprints) done and verified by the school district in which the field/clinical experiences will be completed is required prior to the assignment of any student to a field/clinical experience. Students not cleared by the school district will not be permitted access to schools.

  • All courses are prerequisites for Student Internship (Term 8). The Director of the Office of Educational Field Experiences (Building 57) for the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) facilitates the field experience placement of music education students in local schools. The application for internship must be filed by the fourth Friday of the semester prior to the semester of enrollment for internship. For more information visit the COEHS Office of Educational Field Experiences website.

  • Music Education majors are required to complete Senior Recital in applied music in the last semester of applied study.

  • Passing the Professional Education Test (PEd) and the Subject Area Examination (SAE) in Music K-12 of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) is required before internship.

  • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) or by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.

  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Music Education majors must complete a total of 126 semester hours. Students must complete at least 25 percent of the required degree credit hours in residence at UNF.
