Actuaries assemble and analyze data to estimate the probability and likely cost of an event such as death, sickness, injury, disability, or loss of property. Actuaries also address financial questions, including those involving the level of pension contributions required to produce a certain retirement income level and the way in which a company should invest resources to maximize return on investments in light of potential risk. The BS in Statistics with a concentration in Actuarial Science prepares graduates for such a career. Using their broad knowledge of statistics, mathematics, and finance, actuaries help design insurance policies, pension plans, and other financial strategies in a manner which will help ensure that the plans are maintained on a sound financial basis. A career in actuarial science is one of the best options that a student with talents and interests in statistics and mathematics can pursue. The job market has growing demand for actuaries, and high-paying entry jobs are available in the insurance, consulting, and financial services industries. Visit the Department of Mathematics and Statistics webpage for additional information. Career Planning Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.
