College: Arts and Sciences
Degree: Bachelor of Arts
Major: Economics
Effective Term: Fall 2013
The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics is designed to provide students with the tools and concepts necessary to understand our modern economy, to function more effectively as citizens, and to make sound decisions. A major in economics opens the door to a wide variety of jobs in business, government, finance, and the professions. Economics is particularly useful for those students who plan to enter public service or law, or who plan to go on to graduate study. Visit the Economics and Geography webpage for additional information. Visit the Coggin Career Management Center webpage for employment information. Click on the Students tab of the Career Services webpage for major exploration information.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. General Education Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, SAT/ACT math scores, the student’s major and/or credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). BA in Economics majors will satisfy 3 semester hours of Introductory Social Science with program prerequisites. When selecting a Cultural Diversity course under the Social Sciences requirement, Economics students are encouraged to take GEO 2420 Cultural Geography.

  • Economics Majors should complete College Algebra (or higher) and Elementary Statistics to satisfy General Education Math. These math courses are required prerequisites for some upper-level Economics courses.

  • All BA students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to complete the foreign language or foreign culture requirement with grades of C or higher. Students opting to complete the 8 semester hours of foreign language must select one sequence of Spanish, French, Chinese, German or American Sign Language. Part 1 of languages are typically offered in the fall and part 2 in the spring. Foreign Culture (FC) Option: students who successfully completed 2 years of foreign language in high school have the option to take foreign culture courses instead of college level foreign language. Foreign cultures contain (FC) in the course title. A complete list of foreign culture courses can be found in the Arts & Sciences Advising Office.

  • A minor is required for this degree. The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major. See a list of minors in the undergraduate catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.

  • Economics students are required to complete an international academic experience as one of their Major Electives. Students must select one from the following: 3 credit UNF study abroad courses approved by the department chair or 3 credit economics course (3000/4000 level) abroad. This requirement may be replaced with another 3 credit economics course (3000/4000 level) upon approval by the department chair in the case of extenuating circumstances. Visit the Coggin study abroad advisor, and the Coggin Study Abroad webpage for a current list of Coggin study abroad opportunities.

  • Students should complete ECO 3411 Business Economics Statistics (Term 5) prior to ECO 3421 Econometics.

  • EGN 3613 Economics for Engineers; ECO 3622 American Economic History; and ECO 3701 Contemporary International Economics will not satisfy Major Electives for Economics majors. See university catalog for approved Economics Major Electives.

  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation. For additional information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.
