The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Philosophy major at UNF is designed to appeal to students with diverse needs and interests: students who plan to pursue philosophy at the graduate level, those who desire philosophical training to pursue other careers (e.g., communications, law, psychology, theology, government) and above all, those who simply wish to obtain a solid liberal arts education in one of its most distinguished fields of study. It entails a wide range of courses based on a commitment to pluralism in philosophical analysis, including Anglo-American, European-Continental as well as Comparative Perspectives. Philosophy majors study the main developments and traditions in the history of philosophy; develop critical reasoning skills and facility with logical analysis; study modes of ethical inquiry and gain the ability to apply them to current social issues; and learn to read complex prose systematically and critically as well as to write and speak in a reasoned, persuasive, and argumentatively effective manner. Students are encouraged to consult the chairperson of the Philosophy Department for answers to additional questions about the Philosophy major and if unsure which Philosophy concentration to select. Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. Although only one lower-level Philosophy course is required for UNF's General Education, Philosophy majors are encouraged to take two additional lower-level Philosophy courses as Free Electives. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. General Education Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, SAT/ACT math scores, the student’s major and/or credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). All Philosophy majors are encouraged to take a lower-level (2000 level) Philosophy course no later than Term 2. All BA students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to complete the foreign language or foreign culture requirement with grades of C or higher. Students opting to complete the 8 semester hours of foreign language must select one sequence of Spanish, French, Chinese, German or American Sign Language. Part 1 of languages are typically offered in the fall and part 2 in the spring. Foreign Culture (FC) Option: students who successfully completed 2 years of foreign language in high school have the option to take foreign culture courses instead of college level foreign language. Foreign cultures contain (FC) in the course title. A complete list of foreign culture courses can be found in the Arts & Sciences Advising Office. A minor is required for this degree. The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major. See a list of minors in the undergraduate catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor. Students must complete 33 semester hours of Philosophy coursework in the major. The 18 semester hours of Major Requirements are referenced in the map below: PHH3100 Ancient Philosophy, PHH3400 Modern Philosophy, PHI3601 Ethics, PHI3130 Symbolic Logic, one of the following: PHI3300 Introduction to Epistemology OR PHI3500 Introduction to Metaphysics, and PHI4935 Philosophy Seminar. PHI4935 Philosophy Seminar may be repeated for credit, with the additional hours applying toward Major Electives. Consult an Academic Advisor prior to retaking PHI4935. Students are expected to complete 3000 level Major Requirements prior to registering for 4000 level Philosophy Electives. Six semester hours of Philosophy Electives must be completed at the 4000 level. Only 3 semester hours of PHI4905 Directed Individual Study may be used toward the major. No more than 15 semester hours of transfer credit may be applied toward this major. The Suggested Schedule on the left side of the roadmap represents an ideal schedule, and may be adjusted to meet the student's needs. The Mile-Markers on the right side of the roadmap are also ideal markers, focusing on completion of Major Requirements prior to Major Electives and Minor courses. Students enrolling at UNF as freshmen or sophomores may begin taking Major Required courses: PHH3100 Ancient Philosophy, PHH3400 Modern Philosophy, PHI3601 Ethics, PHI3300 Introduction to Epistemology OR PHI3500 Introduction to Metaphysics and PHI3130 Symbolic Logic (or other PHI Logic course) as early as Term 3 and Term 4. All required courses have to meet grade C or higher. A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation.
